The electrical power has multiple types. Such as AC power & DC power.

DIRECT CURRENT

Direct current do not change its direction & remains constant throughout the time, Its magnitude stay fixed at a level. Direct current flows in between two terminals; Positive & Negative, from positive to negative.

SOURCES OF DIRECT CURRENT

There are multiple methods to generate direct current. Such as DC generator, batteries, solar cells, rectifier power supplies. Some of the direct current sources are  discussed next.

DC generator

These generators are specially designed to generate direct current. A simple DC generator contains an armature moving in between the magnetic filed. While an armature is connected to carbon brush mechanism through a commutator arrangement.

All type of moving vehicles which are equipped with batteries contains these type of DC generators. These generators are mechanically connected with the engine. Engines while running moves these generators which further produces the DC power to charge the batteries or to operate digital appliances.

 Solar cell

Solar cell converts light energy into electrical energy & Electrical Energy generated by it; is complete DC.

DC power supply

DC power supplies converts AC power into DC power through an electronic circuitry. There are multiple types of power supplies which converts single phase AC supply or even a 3 phase AC supply into DC supply. An image of 1.1Amps of 24V DC power supply is shown below:

APPLICATIONS OF DIRECT CURRENT

Domestic usage

Our electronic gadgets mobiles, Laptops, Tv’s, all are working on DC. An alternating current may be connected as an input to these gadgets but inside these gadget electronic circuitry needs DC power which is been provided by the power supplies inside these gadgets.

Industrial Usage

Electronics is the brain behind the every single advance system running in the industry. Total Electronics works on direct current.

Inverters

Inverters provides backup AC power supply under the shut down condition. Inverters converts DC power supply into AC supply. Inverters are possible due to presence of batteries(A DC power source)

Electric vehicles

There are multiple reasons, We are shifting towards electric vehicles & All these Electric vehicles are running on direct current.

FAQ – Direct Current (DC)

DC is used in electronic devices, mobile phones, laptops, battery systems, electric vehicles, and solar power systems.

5. What is pure DC and pulsating DC?
Pure DC has a constant voltage level, while pulsating DC varies in magnitude but still flows in one direction.

6. Why is DC preferred in electronic circuits?
Electronic components require a stable and constant voltage, which is provided by DC power.

7. Can AC be converted into DC?
Yes, AC can be converted into DC using a rectifier circuit.

8. Is battery power AC or DC?
Batteries always supply Direct Current (DC).

9. What are the advantages of Direct Current?
DC provides stable voltage, is easy to store in batteries, and is efficient for low-voltage and electronic applications.
