In Industry, Counting is very important parameter in production line. If we don’t rely on technology than we need extra workforce for counting, Extra workforce means extra investment. Industries always try to reduce the work force & time consumption in production. That’s why a counting meter is very useful device which reduces the both time & workforce in production.

What is an Industrial Counting Meter?

An industrial counting meter is an electronic device used to count pulses generated from sensors, switches, or machine signals. It helps in tracking production quantity, batch counts, and machine cycles in manufacturing environments.

These counters reduce manual errors and improve accuracy in industrial automation systems.

We can use counting meter of any company but basic wiring remains the same. In this post, For better understanding, We are going to discuss the Selec make counting meter XC410.

COUNTING METER SELEC XC410

This meter is utilized as a counter. It only needs a signal either through its potential free contact or through a digital signal.
This small size counting meter comes in panel cutout of 29mm×71mm.
Its display is 6digits, 0.3″ height, Red 7 seg LED.

How does Selec XC410 Works

The counter receives pulse signals from a connected sensor. Each pulse increments the count value by one.

For example :

  • A proximity sensor detects a passing object.

  • It sends a pulse to the counter.

  • The counter increases the display count.

This makes it ideal for counting :

  • Bottles on a conveyor

  • Machine strokes

  • Component production

  • Packaging quantities

TERMINAL CONNECTIONS SELEC-XC410

  • It has total 12 terminals. Terminals 10&12 are neutral & phase respectively, Potential difference should be 230VAC (+-10%).
  • Terminals 1&4 are positive & negative respectively with 12Volts. These terminals are used for proximity sensors
  • Terminal 2 is PNP CNT, output lead of PNP sensor is connected to this point; Similarly ; terminal 3 is NPN CNT, output lead of NPN sensor is connected to this point.
  • Resetting the XC410 : Terminals 5&6 used to enable front reset. If we don’t short these two terminals than front reset button doesn’t work.
  • For remote reset there are terminals 4 & 5, Just short terminals 4 & 5.
  • Input 7 & 8 are used to very the input speed. If input signal changes faster than we do not need to shot these two terminals but if input signal is slow than we have to short these two terminals.

INPUT CONNECTIONS

1. NPN/PNP  proximity Sensor

NPN/PNP sensors are three wired. 2 wires are power wires positive & negative while 3rd wire is signal wire.
In PNP sensors, 3rd wire produces positive signal & on the other hand in NPN sensor, 3rd wire produces negative signal.
Power wires should be connected to 1(+12Volts) & 4(Negative) terminals while 3rd signal wire must be connected to 2nd terminal in PNP case & 3rd terminal in NPN case as discussed above.

NOTE: Sensors wire colors (Red=positive, Black=negative, Green= output & Brown=positive, Blue=negative, Black= output)
Sensor voltage should be 12 volt DC.
2. Potential free Contact
We can also use potential free contacts for counting. The counting works only by shorting 3&4 terminals.
Potential free Contacts are those contacts which do not require external power source. These potential free contacts itself comes out from the system.
These contact either have marginal potential or negligible potential Which should be shorted for proper function.

Applications of Industrial Counting Meter

  • Manufacturing industries

  • Packaging machines

  • Conveyor belt systems

  • Textile machinery

  • Printing machines

  • Production monitoring systems

Advantages of Using Selec XC410

  • Improves production monitoring

  • Reduces human counting errors

  • Enhances automation efficiency

  • Compact and easy installation

  • Reliable long-term operation
