When We are working in Industry. It is the voltage tester which we use as our finger tip to trace the wires & Check the potential of the node. Without a voltage tester, In Industry; It is like a soldier without weapon on a border. So, Voltage tester is the important if you’re working as an Electrician.

” At that time,  I  was working in Industry. I checked the potential/Voltage at MCB terminal with my voltage tester, It showed no indication. I thought, There is no power supply. But, It was my voltage tester which was not working. For a new voltage tester I went to store But unfortunately it was closed.

Now I have only option to repair my voltage tester. In few minutes; I repaired it.”

The method ; how i repaired it; will explain later. But first, We have to see its construction & Working.

 

Voltage Tester

Voltage Tester is a type of mini screw driver Which is used to detect the potential. This tester contains an indication bulb which glows when tester’s tip get in contact with potential of specified limit.

Voltage tester is a type of series connection in which driver tip, a resistor, a neon bulb, a spring & a end metal cap- All are aligned in a series manner.
When a tip get in contact with potential & end metal cap get earthed through our finger tip, Circuit ger completed which results Neon bulb starts glowing. Potential get drop across the resistor & neon bulb. A very minor current flows through the circuit because of resistor such that we don’t get any sensation that current is flowing through our body.

Here Resistor is the main element which limits the current OR we can say that a significant voltage drop occurs across the resistor.

A Circuit diagram of Voltage tester is shown below. Total circuit is a type of series circuit Which starts from potential node to resistor to neon bulb to end metal cap. The end metal cap act like an earthing when out finger tip get in contact with it.

Repairing of Voltage Tester

“I  dismantled my tester, I observed that the another side of tip which is connected to resistor is corroded. That’s why circuit get break. I cleared the tip & installed the elements again. It starts working.”

CONCLUSION

  • In a industry/factory; The environmental conditions are very hard- Iron dust, chemical, moisture, smoke, Temperature all exist there. Due to which; terminals of electrical components get corroded. As a result; Circuit get break. Terminals & contacts should be cleaned.
  • Always Make sure before usage; The devices & tools should be well insulated & their working should be appropriate according to specified voltage standard.

 

NOTE– Voltage tester is dangerous Because we are using our finger as a current path. Voltage tester is having a voltage rating, beyond that rating it is lethal ! We should use a voltmeter instead of voltage tester.
